Supremes ok Healthcare

Today (6/28/12) the Supreme Court upheld the healthvcare reform passed by our wimpy Democrats and President Obama. This is good, I think. While I am glad this reform was upheld, I do not support the law. Not because I think it goes too far, but because it does not go far enough. We need universal health care, not to be making sure more of us are enriching the insurance companies. It would be good to think that if this was overturned, we would finally get that universal healthcare but I doubt it.

Health Insurance is not Health care. Those who complain that this would put the government between them and the doctor, are not acknowledging that the insurance companies already fill that roll. The doctors can proscribe a course of treatment, but can only proceed if the insurance company approves it. Would you rather have a government agency responsible to the people approve treatment, or an insurance agent who is motivated to always say no and thus get a bigger pay check making those decisions? Unless you are paying the doctor directly, someone else will be saying yes or no. The problem with the U.S. health care system is it is too profit motivated. When a business knows it will be paid anything it asks, there is no motivation to keep costs down. Health care should not be a for profit business.

For me, the best part of this reform is that insurance companies can no longer deny coverage for those with per-existing conditions. However just as you can’t wait till you have an accident, then buy insurance and expect them to fix it, you can’t wait till you are sick and expect the health insurance company to pay up. That is why we need universal health care, getting sick is part of life. We need to be able to get the treatment we need at a price that is affordable, not pay money to a for profit company in case we get sick. Yes the insurance companies have to offer me a policy, but nothing says it has to be affordable. I am glad reform is going forward, perhaps in time we will get what we need.

Just my thoughts,
